KXT Happy Funtime Fest

KXT Happy Funtime Fest

When KERA 90.1 FM, Dallas' long running National Public Radio outlet for North Texas, spun off a second station devoted to music, expectations were high. This station is KXT 91.7. Thus far, it has been off to a great start with many local events, living up to the need for music not normally heard on the corporate FM dial.

KXT has upped the ante with a new festival being held June 1 at the Gexa Energy Pavilion in Dallas. The event is called the KXT's Summer Cut- Happy Funtime Fest, and they have assembled an impressive line-up of local, regional and indie bands. This should make the event successful based on the bill alone.

The headlining band is Oklahoma's The Flaming Lips. They are best recognized for the big hit "She Don't Use Jelly," but have continued to maintain a strong world-wide following by doing things their own way. They are known for psychedelic sounds, impressive stage shows, and breaking down barriers between audience and performer.

After a period of silence, Brooklyn's rock band, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, came back with their long awaited third album last year. They will be making an appearance at the Happy Funtime Fest. This a huge indie name for the festival and will diversify the lineup.

Next, in order of grandiosity, is St. Vincent, formerly from Dallas and formerly a member of the Polyphonic Spree. She has been rising in popularity since striking out on her own and has releases on 4AD in the US and Beggars Banquet in the UK. The scheduled lineup also has a lot of great local flare, featuring Telegraph Canyon, Smile, Smile and Air Review.

The festival will take place on Friday, June 1. Tickets for the concert are on sale now at Live Nation. They range in price from $20 to $60. Doors open at 6pm.
